Mabel Jiménez is a documentary photographer and editor in San Francisco with over 15 years experience working in nonprofit local media. She is the Visual Editor for CatchLight’s California Visual Desk where she supports CatchLight Local Fellows and their host newsrooms in enhancing their use of visuals for publication. She is the former photo editor for El Tecolote bilingual newspaper, where for seven years she led a diverse, award-winning team of photographers and created “Latino Life,” a yearly photo exhibition highlighting the experience of Latinos in the Bay Area. In 2019, she documented the refugee crisis at the U.S./Mexico border, receiving awards for reporting and photography. In 2021, she embedded in San Francisco’s COVID Command Center and documented the response of the city’s Latino community against the pandemic for the San Francisco Arts Commission.
